The schooner L'Etoile and its sister ship, the Belle-Poule, were built in Fecamp, France in 1932, and, like the famous schooners of Paimpol, were used for cod fishing along the coasts of Iceland. The cod season lasted for seven months, and the ships fishing in these areas were often subjected to the rough weather of low-pressure areas. Because these schooners had proved that they could sail in very inclement weather, they were chosen in 1938 for use by the Navigation Training School, where cruises are planned long before weather conditions are known. The vessels were equipped with 125 HP engines, allowing them to reach port in poor wind conditions.
